Attack on the Games

An Attack on Titan/Hunger Games Crossover

Chapter 7
The Scoring

The next couple days are the same routine. We get up, talk with our Mentor, go train, go to bed and start all over again. We are all starting to get to know each other a little better each day and we are able to remember each other’s names now. We learn that Ymir, from District Three, is an orphan, but unlike us, who lived on our own, she grew up moving from home to home, or to whoever would take her in in the foster care, which would explain why she doesn’t have a last name. She says she doesn’t even remember who her real family is anymore. Christa is the illegitimate child of the wealthiest man from District One but her mother was a prostitute that the man hired one night and he refuses to claim her as his daughter and her mother doesn’t even like to look at her. During our time here, Ymir and Christa have gotten exceptionally close. I hate to admit it but I guess even in the wealthier Districts people still have their hardships.  And Jean and Eren continue to get into fights for no reason.

Today we’re practicing hand-to-hand combat. Eren is paired with Reiner, who makes me nervous at first since Reiner is so much stronger than him. But surprisingly Eren’s able to hold his own. We’re given a fake knife and the other person’s supposed to take the knife from you as they take you down. Eren is able to take the knife from Reiner several times and on the last time I hear Reiner grunt in discomfort as Eren slams him to the ground.

“Sorry, do you want to switch?” Eren asks Reiner. He gets up off the ground but doesn’t answer. Instead he smiles and points towards Annie who, like usual, is leaving early.

“Look at that slacker, Eren. Should we teach her a lesson?” Reiner smirks. Eren looks at Reiner uneasily but he is already calling out to Annie, who reluctantly walks towards them.

“Hey Reiner, how long have you known Annie?” Eren asks. And I remember that Reiner and Annie both come from District Two.

“I’ve known Annie for a long time, Eren. We practically grew up together. But she can be a bit hard to manage sometimes,” Reiner answers. “Slacking off again, Annie?” he asks when Annie finally makes it to them.

Annie crosses her arms and glares at them. She doesn’t look too happy.

“Tell you what,” Reiner starts, “If you can beat us in this fight you can leave. Sounds good?”

“Fine,” Annie remarks and gets into a strange fighting stance. Her fists come up over eye level and she hunches over a little. She looks like an experienced fighter.

“Alright Eren, you’re first,” Reiner says as he pushes him towards Annie. Eren looks back at Reiner nervously but clutches the knife with both hands and charges at Annie. But right at the last second Annie ducks out of the way and her leg swoops out and she kicks Eren’s legs right out from under him. He lands hard on his back and has all the air knocked out of his lungs.

“Can I go now?” Annie asks Reiner in her bored voice.

“You were supposed to take the knife from Eren,” Reiner corrects.

Eren, who had just gotten back up, looks terrified as Annie comes at him and for a second time and gets knocked to the ground again but this time Annie twists his arm up and grabs the knife from him. She then throws it at Reiner. “Your turn,” she tells him.

Reiner looks nervous and is about to back away but Eren calls up from his uncomfortable position on the ground, “Come on, Reiner. Weren’t you the one who said we ought to teach her a lesson?”

“Your right,” Reiner sighs and then gets a determined face and charges at Annie. But as easily as she took down Eren, it was no different for Reiner and he ends up disarmed and on the ground as well and Annie marches out of the room.

Since that day, Eren asks if Annie could teach him her fighting moves. At first she disregards him and declines. But Eren is persistent and never takes no for an answer.

“You are the best fighter here, Annie! Please show me how you do those moves,” Eren states.

“Why would I teach you something that would only help you use it against me in the arena?” Annie demands.

She has a point but Eren doesn’t budge. “I’ve never seen anyone fight like you. You are really amazing. I guess I just wanted to know more about how you fight.”

Annie’s face softens, but only slightly. “You really think my fighting is that great?”

“Yes!”

Annie sighs, “I know I’m going to regret this.”

For the remainder of the week Eren and Annie fight each other as Annie points out certain moves that she does. Eren is a fast learner and determined and he can almost keep up with her. As they’re fighting, Annie slides behind him and traps his arms and uses Eren’s knife against him. I am just barely able to hear what she’s saying to him from where I’m watching but I’m able to catch most of it.

“Why are we fighting each other, Eren?” she asks. Eren is only able to look at her from the corner of his eye but he looks confused by her question. “Who is the real enemy here?” she questions and looks up to the windows were people are able to observe us from. Eren frowns but looks up at the windows too and I know exactly what he’s thinking. I feel a burning inside of me but I blame it on the thought of Annie hurting Eren, even if it is only practice.

“What do you mean?” Eren asks Levi. It’s almost the end of the week and tomorrow we are to be judged and scored individually on how well we’ll do in the Games.

Levi makes an agitated sound. “Tomorrow you are being scored. That means do whatever you can to impress them.”

“But I thought you said not to show them our biggest strengths?” states Eren.

“Yes, but now the higher your score the more Sponsors you’ll most likely gain. The thing is, only the judges can see what you can actually do. Nobody else will know what you’ve done; they’ll just see your score,” Levi explains.

Eren can’t stop moving and he paces around our apartment. I watch him anxiously; Eren is usually not like this unless he gets extremely nervous. And I can’t blame him because the scoring will determine if we will get Sponsors or not. And for most cases Sponsors determine if you live or die in the arena. I know Eren must doubt himself or he would not be pacing so much.

“Eren, please calm down,” I tell him but he either ignores me or just can’t hear me because he continues to pace.

“Yes, please, you’re giving me a headache,” Levi says rubbing his temples.

I can’t stand to see Eren like this anymore so the next time he passes close to me I reach out and grab his hand, “Eren,” I plead with him. He stops and looks at our hands then back up at me.

“I’m sorry,” he says and sinks down into the couch next to me. I notice that he still hasn’t let go of my hand. But he seems to relax more and his shaking subsides. Finally, he looks up at Levi and asks, “What score did you get, Levi?”

Levi frowns, “I don’t see how my score will help you.”

“I’m just curious,” Eren shrugs.

Levi rolls his eyes. “Twelve is the highest score that you can get and one is the lowest.”

I narrow my eyes, “Okay, so what did you get?”

Levi turns his glare to me but I hold my own and don’t look away no matter how intimidating his stare is. And without even blinking he says, “Zero.”

Eren and I stare at him then look at each other. We both give each other disbelieving looks and I look back at Levi. “That’s impossible.”

“It’s not if you don’t do anything,” Levi remarks.

“What do you mean?” Eren asks.

For the first time since meeting Levi, he looks uneasy. “I refused to do anything for the scoring and because of it I was given a zero. But not after being punished for it.”

“That’s why you didn’t have any Sponsors,” Eren comments.

I remember that before Levi, there weren’t any Victors who were alive in our District so Levi wouldn’t have even had a Mentor. No one was there for Levi while he was going through the same stuff we are now. He would’ve had no one to try to gain him Sponsors even after his zero. There was no one to try to help him the way he is helping us.

“Why did you do nothing?” I ask.

Levi still looks uncomfortable and tries to look anywhere else but at us. “I thought it was unfair how they just threw me into their stupid Games. I didn’t want to be part of their plans. I didn’t want anything to do with the Capitol. They murdered everyone I cared about and I didn’t want to do what they expected me to do. So I did nothing and they got angry. They thought I was rebelling and they sent in people who handcuffed me to a beam and broadcasted as they brutally beat me, saying that because I didn’t grow up in the Districts I acted like a wild dog therefore I must be trained like a wild dog while the judges just watched and laughed. And then they gave me a zero.” He then laughs dryly, “They never would have bet on me winning though. And it was the sweetest revenge that I could have ever imagined.”

Rebelling? There hasn’t been a rebellion within the Walls since before the Games were created. In fact, it was a rebellion that started the Games in the first place as punishment. No one has been stupid enough to start another rebellion since. Why would the Capitol be so afraid of one person, no, of one child starting a rebellion just because he wouldn’t do exactly what they wanted him to do? Is the Capitol really that paranoid?

“I don’t want any part of their plans either!” Eren exclaims. “I hate it! I hate these Games. I hate these Walls. I hate the Capitol!”

Levi’s eyes gleam as he laughs; “Now that’s the spirit, kid. Maybe if you win we can do something about it.”

I groan, “Don’t be stupid, Eren.”

Levi smirks. “She’s right. Just do your best in the scoring and behave. You guys are going to need as much Sponsors as you can get. Everyone’s favorites are already the Players from District Two. And they’re from the wealthier Wall that always have Victors.”

Levi’s right. People from the Capitol always seem to favor Players from Wall Sina and even occasionally Wall Rose. Very rarely are Players from Wall Maria are their favorites and get very little Sponsors. Since the very start people have loved Annie and Reiner. Both looked stunning for the parade and both are extremely strong fighters, either of them are a sure-win in the Capitols eyes, but not for long.

All the Players sit in some form of waiting room outside of the area where we are judged. They send us in in order of our District so once again Eren and I are last. The Military Police usher Bertholdt in first and ten minutes later they bring him back out and he’s allowed to go back to his apartment and later tonight they will broadcast all of our scores. Everyone’s either too nervous or too concentrated to talk and we all sit in silence and wait for the Military Police to escort us.

Finally, it’s just Eren and I left and we sit in a suffocating silence until they send out Sasha. “Boy from Six, you’re up,” The Military Police call as they grab Eren’s arm and lead him into the next room.

“Good luck,” I call out just as the door closes and I’m left alone besides the other Military Police who guards the door. I know everyone is given exactly ten minutes but for some reason it seems like it is taking Eren forever as I wonder what he could be showing the judges.

At last, Eren emerges and gives me a weak smile. “Good luck,” he mumbles to me as they take me by the arm and haul me into the judging room.

I look around and the judges are up in a viewing room similar to the one in the training area. There are all the weapons you could imagine laying on a nearby table and multiple target dummies. And on one side of the room there’s a small obstacle course.

“You may begin,” someone from the judging room calls out. I look back up at the judges and they seem tired and uninterested in anything that I’m about to show them. I get angry because my score does not only depend on if I’ll live but Eren as well. My score depends on if I’ll get Sponsors and Sponsors are the key to not just my survival but Eren’s survival as well. This is a crucial time for my sake in the Games and they aren’t even paying attention if I will perform well or not. I grind my teeth and I can’t think of just one thing to do to get their attention so I do it all.

First, I run through the obstacle course with ease and in record time, a few of the judges start to sit up in their seat as I grab some of the throwing knives and throw them at the center of the target. Next, I grab the bow and arrows and hit the dead center of the target. When I get through all the weapons I grab my favorite for last. The double swords feel just as perfect in my hands as they did the first time. I spin them around and make fast figure eight motions. I charge at a dummy and to get my leverage I jump off a wall and spin through the air until I slice clean through the dummy and it falls apart at my feet. I look up at the judges and they are all staring wide eyed and open mouthed at me. Everything I did was perfect. My accuracy was perfect, my form was perfect, it was as if I had been trained my whole life and not just this week. And without even saying anything I let my swords clatter to the floor and turn and walk out.

“Tell me again what you did, Mikasa,” Hanji asks in disbelief.

“Everything,” I shrug and Hanji’s hands clap together in glee.

“You are bound to get a high score! I just knew you were something special the moment you volunteered!” Hanji exclaims.

I shrug again and look over at Eren. “How do you think you did?”

Eren shrugs, “I think I did pretty well. I know I’m better at defensive fighting but it’s hard to show that in there.”

I agree and Levi calls us over to the screen because the score announcements are about to start. We all gather around our giant screen and wait. Bertholdt’s score is the first to appear. First his picture is shown and next to it the number 10 appears. Christa appears next and soon the number 8 is shown.

“What did I tell you brats?” Levi remarks, “An eight isn’t too shabby for a little thing like that.”

Reiner’s face appears and he got an 11 and Levi lets out a long whistle. An eleven is an incredibly good score and not many people can get such a high score. The judges are usually very stingy with giving out anything above a ten. Annie shows up next and she manages to score a 10 like Bertholdt. I’ve never doubted her ability to receive a high score even though she doesn’t like to participate in training. She always seemed dangerous to me since the moment I first saw her on screen.

Both Marco and Ymir receive a solid 7. Jean accomplishes an 8 and I wonder what he did to impress the judges. He never seemed to be too strong during training but he is very smart which would also make him very skillful and he can figure things out very easily. However, the girl, I think her name was Hannah, from Jean’s District only received a 4 and I feel pity for the young girl. She probably will receive little or even no Sponsors.

Connie doesn’t do much better and he scores a 6 while on the other hand Sasha obtains an 8. It’s the moment of truth as we all hold our breath and wait for Eren’s score. His face shows up on the screen followed by the number 9 and we all cheer and Hanji ruffles his hair. I close my eyes and smile. I knew Eren would get a good score. Once he puts his mind to something he has such a burning desire to do well at it. Suddenly, I hear everyone gasp and I open my eyes. They are all looking at me and I stare back at them confused.

“What?” I ask and Eren turns my head to look at the screen. I see my own face staring back at me but I assume it’s what’s next to my face that has everyone in such complete shock. The first thought that comes to my mind is that this can’t be right and they must have made a mistake. Because Levi may have been the only person in history to score a zero but I am also the only person in history to have the score of 12+.
new chapter!! yes, levi's beating was inspired by eren's court beating. there has been a headcanon going around that levi had to go through the same ordeal as eren before officially being part of the survey corps and that is why levi knew what to do and i like that headcanon so i went with it!

i suppose i should announce now that there WILL be a sequel to this story! even though this story is not even close to being halfway done! so hopefully i can find time to write it! but i for sure want a sequel!

my classes are starting to get crazy so my updates will most likely be slower but just bare with me! we are almost to the arena! i believe chapter 10 is the start of it! then it will get sad :( so enjoy these happy moments while you can!!!

thanks for reading!!
